“Let go of the mind commentary and feel the flow of who you are… who we are as a community,” world renowned yoga teacher Shiva Rea told a crowd of over 500 people on the National Mall this past Saturday. Shiva Rea headlined the Yoga Festival on the Mall, the kick-off to DC Yoga Week.

Set against the backdrop of the National Monument and a clear blue sky, the festival featured hula hoopers from Hoop Dance DC, acro yogis, Kirtan drummers, Budokon yogis, and two separate yoga classes—one lead by DC yoga teachers, and the other lead by Shiva Rea herself. Shiva energized the crowd with fist pumping, freestyle dancing, and her signature fluid-like practice. After the class, she greeted yogis with hugs, and stayed to pose for pictures and chat with the community.

DC Yoga Week, which is organized by 15 yoga studios, runs from May 15th through May 22nd. Throughout the week, the participating studios offer free and five dollar yoga classes to the community. The intent of DC Yoga week is to make yoga more accessible, to invite beginners to the practice, and to unite the yoga community. If you are curious about yoga, or want to try out a different studio, this is your chance!
