Freshest of All Time - BBoy Battle

Photos by Brandon Bloch. Words by Kelly Ferraro. Special thanks to Readyset DC.

In case you missed the “Freshest of All Time” BBoy battle put on by Words, Beats, Life this past Saturday, July 10th in Columbia Heights, just know that these guys could probably put some of the world’s best yogis to shame. Not only do the bboys have sick, jaw-dropping moves that will make your body squirm in pain just by observing them – they are also uber flexible, rhythmic, and have cool stage names like “Toyz R Us,” “Shaq and Kobe,” and “Cloak and Dagger.”

Ever dreamt of holding handstand? Well the bboys take handstand to levels we yogis could never dream of. Over the course of the three hour competition, I witnessed several dozen handstands, including back-bending handstands, one-armed handstands, and this windmill-like, rotating one-armed handstand. Sick.

And I could not help but draw comparisons between yogis and bboys. As I observed the bboys, I noticed that there were several yoga asanas at the core of their moves. In particular, Eka Pada Koundinyasana strikes an amazing simliarity to  a split-legged arm balance (which I am told is called a “freeze”) that is popular among the bboys. Because yoga and the bboy moves are interrelated, I thought that yogis could pick up breakdancing with fair ease, and vice versa. (So, I couldn’t resist striking Eka Pada Koundinyanasa in order to make myself at home with the bboys).

Apart from shared moves, the bboy and communities overlap in other areas. We are both relatively small, tight-knit communities who mostly communicate through word-of-mouth. We get emotional highs from “hitting” new poses, and are bound to each other through a shared love of rhythm and movement. Oh, and we also have a shared love of music: where the bboy “Domkey” spins beats in between dance-offs, we have yoga teacher DJ Jeffrey Platts to mix sounds in between asanas.

I don’t know about you, but I am sensing some sort of yogis v. bboys pose-off in the near future? Anyone interested in some headspinning?

Special thanks to Readyset DC for sharing your photogs, or ”p-boys.”

Coming Soon to Logan Circle! BTI Dance Institute

Stumbling, um, I mean, walking home from Fourth of July festivities Sunday evening (slash Monday morning), I couldn’t help but notice this sign posted outside of Posto Restaurant near the Studio Theater:

Truth be told, I had a short love affair with ballet last December, which lasted about a month. By pure coincidence, it ended right around the time that Joy of Motion’s Dupon Circle location shut its doors.

But I loved the workout I was getting from the classes – my legs felt longer and leaner, ass felt more tightened and toned, and core felt stronger. So of course I was completely thrilled when I saw that BTI Dance Institute was opening it’s doors right in my neighborhood!

So now I have no more excuses. No woes about taking the metro all the way to Joy of Motion in Bethesda, or battling through the crowds of hipsters on H Street to make it to Atlas Dance Studio (and Sticky Rice).

Can’t wait to slip on my ballet slippers and leg warmers, and take a trip back to the 80′s and find the barre at BTI.

Interested in twinkling your toes? Check out BTI’s adult dance schedule. (Bonus – they also have Afro Brazilian Dance Classes, yoga, pilates, and belly dancing!).

And Now Its Time for a FlashMob…

I don’t know about you all, but that Oprah 24th season opener on YouTube with the flash dance mob shakin’ it to I Gotta Feeling was just about the greatest online treat of my Fall 2009. I loved the seemingly random, yet highly choreographed routine that brought together people from all over the city for what just looked like a whole lotta fun.

So when I saw a link to Dance/Metro DC’s Dance Is the Answer flash mobs being organized all over the District of Columbia from April 15 – May 2, it was a celebration of epic proportions at my desk (complete with me squealing “OMG!!!!!” and jumping up and down in my chair).

Seriously folks, amazing dance companies from all over the city will teach you how to dance a choreographed routine, give you an online video to study, and then organize a time and place for you to show up and show off your skills. How cool is that? Read More
