We Sweat You, DC!

We sweat the District. And apparently, the District out-sweats the rest of the nation when it comes to fitness.  We’ve got the skinny on why…
DSC_0492 DC Bike to Work Day 2010 DC Yoga Week Launch

For the third consecutive year, DC was ranked the fittest city by the American Fitness Index (AFI), administered by the American College of Sports Medicine. The report, “Health and Community Fitness Status of the 50 Largest Metropolitan Areas,” uses a number of criteria to measure the health and fitness pulse of the nation. The study measures each city’s performance based on 30 personal and community health indicators, including acres of parks, death rate from cardiovascular disease, obesity, the number of primary care physicians per capita and the percent of residents who bicycle or walk to work. (Read the full report).

DC scored 73.5 out of a possible score of 100 in the study, narrowly topping Boston (72.6), Minneapolis-St.Paul (71.7), Seattle (70.5), and Portland (70.4). And just because it is fun to win, ahem, we mean compare: New York City (52.9) ranked 21st  and Los Angeles (40.5) ranked 38th.  Factors that hurt New York City and LA were lack of access to parks, recreation centers, pools, and tennis courts.

What factors help DC rise in the rankings? The following are a few of the factors that make Washingtonians fitter than your average city dweller.

  • Higher percentage eating 5+ servings of fruits/vegetables daily
  • More park units per capita
  • More swimming pools per capita
  • Lower percent currently smoking
  • Lower percent obese
  • More farmers’ markets per capita
  • Higher percent walking or bicycling to work
  • More recreation centers per capita
  • Higher percent in excellent or very good health
  • More tennis courts per capita
  • Number of primary healthcare providers per capita

What else makes DC so fit? We also might add a few more factors to the list that help make Washingtonians healthy. For example, it doesn’t hurt that triathlete and marathoner Adrian Fenty is probably the fittest mayor in the U.S. (hey – leadership matters!).

DC also has one of the nation’s strongest running communities: the District boasts a plethora of run clubs, a race almost every weekend, and is home to some of the nation’s top-ranked, elite runners.

Also high on the list is our biking scene, which has its own bike lobby (WABA), and over 60 miles of bike lanes throughout the District. And in 2008, DC became the first American city to introduce a bike sharing program when it launched SmartBike DC. (Read about SmartBike’s Launch).

We would also cite the high number of excellent private fitness facilities, with home-grown fitness brands like Results, Mint, Vida, Balance, and over 40 unique yoga studios in DC proper alone.  In addition to dance studios, dance organizations, hula hooping groups, and pole dancing workout studios, DC is also home to B.fit, one of a small handful of pure barre studios on the east coast.

Weigh in! Why do you think that Washingtonians are so fit? Is it because of public access to recreational facilities? Because we have a more educated population? A strong running community? Please share your  thoughts in the comments below!

Mint Pilates: A Refreshing Fitness Experience

I’m flying. Literally. I’m springing off my toes, bounding freely. I land as gently and nimbly as a cat, before rebounding and sending myself flying off once again. A second time, I land just as softly on my toes, completely weightless. The sensation is incredible. “This is fabulous!” I think to myself, feeling nostalgic for my youthful days as a dancer and high jumper.

The thing is, I am flying horizontally. Where am I? On a pilates reformer at Mint, under the instruction of Timea Presley, of course!

Studio Preview: Stroga Studio Preview: Stroga

Breathtaking is the best word to describe Stroga, the newest addition to Doug Jefferies’ fitness empire. “Is this really a place where functional training meets yoga?” I think to myself. To me, it feels like a slice of workout heaven. And with floor after floor of natural light, blue-hued walls, and ornate décor, the ascension through Stroga feels like climbing towards the heavens. Okay, here goes… confession time. Call me a narcissist, but I check out my derriere in the mirror whenever I can. I know it’s poor form, but after taking Chad’s boot camp class for several weeks, there is a noticeable difference in my backside. And truth be told, I can’t help staring at it. Seriously – there are muscles in there that haven’t perked up in years! And lo and behold – they are back in business! So I am all over the mirror like white on rice.

That said, I am sharing my latest bootie-toning tip from Results Trainer Chad Raymnd: Single Leg Planks.

Training With Chad (Part 2 of 4)

So it is always around this time of year — when the sun is shining, weather is warm, and flowers are finally starting to peak out from winter– that a panic button goes off inside my head that blares: “Oh crap – why did I drink so many mochas and indulge in so many homemade cookies this winter?”

Then I realize that I have exactly three months to train, tone, and tan my body so that I don’t scare beachgoers into thinking that some gelatin-albino-lady has descended upon the shores. And that’s when I am grateful for trainers like Chad, with targeted workouts that help get my body beach-ready for summer.

The exercise: Side Plank Leg Raisers

Chad helps his clients get killer abs and booties with side plank leg raisers. This exercise can be done anywhere– your home, the gym, yoga studio, or outside. Specifically, side plank leg raisers target the core, gluteus medius, and the abductors, or hips. So, whether you are a yogi, runners, or CrossFitter, this is an exercise that will benefit your workout.

How To Do It

Step 1: First, turn to your right side, and bend your right elbow, extending your hand out in front of you. Extend your left leg and bend your right leg at the knee behind you. Place your left hand on your hip. Push off of your right elbow. Raise your hips, making sure that your head, hips, and feet are on the same imaginary line. Make sure that your hips never sink down past that line.

Step 2: Raise your left leg, to about hip level. Make sure that your leg is straight, without hyperextending your knee. Repeat 15 times on each leg. Chad recommends doing two sets on each side for maximum results.

To workout with Chad: Chad teaches a Boot Camp class every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at noon at the Results Mount Vernon Gym. His high energy workouts incorporate upbeat dance music and his quirky personality. Chad is also a personal trainer for Results Mount Vernon and Farragut Square. For his classes, pre-registration is not necessary, but you should arrive a few minutes early to set up your weights and apparatus. For membership and fees, visit www.ResultstheGym.com.
