Pilates lover and local WelcomeOmDC fan April Black sent us this guest post announcing the opening of a new fitness space taking place THIS weekend. Check it out!

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines.  Think pilates is for pansies?  Think again.  Kelly Griffith opens Fuel Pilates studio in Georgetown this weekend, and promises to make a believer out of you!  Need some added incentive?  All classes this weekend for the grand opening are FREE.  Plus, there’s a party.  Need I say more?

April luvs PilatesFor those of you unfamiliar with pilates, it is based on techniques developed by Joseph Pilates during World World II and focuses on developing a strong and stable core, building strength from the inside out.  The end result is a longer, leaner and meaner body (in the nicest way possible, of course) — since pilates builds strength without adding excess bulk.  Other added benefits include improved posture, better flexibility, and increased body awareness.  With a strong emphasis on breathing, pilates can also help to ease stress and tension.  Now, who in DC doesn’t need that?!

But this is 2010, and Kelly spices up good old Joe’s basic principles with her own personal flair.  Her spunky personality, fun music, and genuine passion for pilates are included in every class.  She will make you work, but not without making you laugh and encouraging you all the while.  And don’t think you will only be working your abs here, folks — your thighs, unwanted “muffin top” region, arms, and back will get some serious attention, as well.

If you’re looking for a more intimate workout tailored to your fitness level and goals, Kelly will be offering private sessions, either on the mat or with the fancy apparatus machines such as the reformer and chair.  In addition to pilates, Fuel Pilates will also offer yoga and Budokon, a fusion of yoga and martial arts, taught by Emma Saal.  Options abound!  Pilates, yoga, and Budokon classes are all on the schedule for you to check out — free of charge — this weekend.

Celebrities who practice pilates include Kelly Ripa, Chelsea Handler, Gwyneth Paltrow, SJP & Jennifer Aniston, to name just a few.  Lest we forget Hugh Grant, proving pilates is not just for women!  Check out the Fuel Pilates websitefor more information, and join the Fuel Pilates facebook page for regular updates and a sneak peek of the cute, new studio, located at 1801 Wisconsin Avenue, NW,  just above Lacoste on M Street in Georgetown.

The grand opening schedule will be as follows.  I hope to see you there!  Ahh, it hurts so good.

I’m flying. Literally. I’m springing off my toes, bounding freely. I land as gently and nimbly as a cat, before rebounding and sending myself flying off once again. A second time, I land just as softly on my toes, completely weightless. The sensation is incredible. “This is fabulous!” I think to myself, feeling nostalgic for my youthful days as a dancer and high jumper.

The thing is, I am flying horizontally. Where am I? On a pilates reformer at Mint, under the instruction of Timea Presley, of course!

Foreword: We listened to your feedback! Check out the new “Pilates” tab, listing various types of Pilates studios by neighborhood. To kick off this new feature, we asked Mariska Breland, owner of Fuse Pilates, to ask one of her students to write a post. So please enjoy the following blog post, written by Fuse Pilates student Rebecca Friedlander. Photography by Srinu Regeti.

“If it was up to me, I’d hop on the elliptical machine in my building’s gym, sweat for 30 minutes or so, have a nice stretch and call it a day. This, unfortunately, does not a hard and toned body make.

And so, as I wish to defy the results of gravity over time, I’ve been forced to expand upon my cardio-heavy workouts, adding core training to the mix. I might find it objectionable if I didn’t enjoy it so much – I stumbled upon one of DC’s dirty little secrets, hidden away for the time being at Flow Yoga and B.fit in Logan Circle: Fuse Pilates.
